Use the Right Child Safety Seat for Your Child

As they grow, children need different types of Child Safety Seats. Use the guide below to determine which Child Safety Seat is safest for your child.

Operating a Rear-facing Child Safety Seat

Harness straps should be at or below the infant's shoulders
Harness straps should fit snugly and lie in a relatively straight line without sagging
The harness chest clip should be placed at the infant's armpit level to keep the straps positioned properly

Operating a Forward-facing Child Safety Seat

Harness straps should be at or above child's shoulders
Harness straps should be threaded through the top slots in most cases
Harness should be snug, and straps should lie in a relatively straight line without sagging
The harness chest clip should be at the child's armpit level to keep the harness straps positioned properly on the child's shoulders

The Danger of Air Bags

While air bags can save the life of an adult, they can be extremely harmful - and sometimes fatal - to children. NEVER use a Child Safety Seat in a seat with a front air bag… the impact of an imploding bag can cause severe brain damage to an infant. The safest place for any child under the age of 12 is in the back seat. However, if your vehicle has side-impact air bags, make sure your child doesn't lean against the door or window.
